This is the best country for retirement. Hint: It’s not the US. | ET REALITY

The United States can do many things well as a country, but retirement is far from one of them, a new global ranking of retirement security suggests.

The country with the greatest retirement security is Norway, followed by Switzerland and Iceland, according to the new study by Natixis Investment Managers. The United States fell two places in this year’s analysis, from 18th in 2022 to 20th in this year’s ranking of 44 nations.

The reasons for America’s lackluster position when it comes to retirement security boil down to the country’s high inflation and rising government debt, as well as lower life expectancy, which has refused due to COVID and the increase in firearm-related overdoses and deaths.

Waiting for a miracle

At the same time, more Americans express greater anxiety about retirement: Natixis found that 47% said it would “take a miracle” to achieve retirement security, up 6 percentage points from 2021.

“The biggest thing has been inflation, and although it’s been more under control in the last six or eight months, people have a little bit of post-traumatic stress,” said Dave Goodsell, director of the Natixis Center for Investor Insights. CBS MoneyWatch.

He added: “A good example is the number of people who said it would take a miracle to retire. Part of that is feeling the pressure of higher prices.”

Notably, these feelings of stress come from a survey group of wealthy individual investors with at least $100,000 in investable assets, while about half of Americans have nothing saved for retirement.

Generation Z saves for retirement earlier than previous generations

Nearly half of those surveyed by Natixis said they believe they will have to make difficult decisions in their later years, a third believe they will need to work in retirement, and about a quarter expect they will have to sell their home.

“The simple truth is that it doesn’t take a miracle: it takes a plan,” Goodsell said. “You really need to take a step back and see what you can do to increase your chances of success.”

The Global Retirement Security Index ranks countries according to four areas: health, quality of life, finances in retirement, and material well-being.

“Countries in the top 10 overall tend to be good all-rounders,” the Natixis analysis concluded.

Norway, which the firm called “an outstanding country,” ranked first for health and fourth for quality of life. Life expectancy increased in Norway, unlike the decline in the United States. The United States ranked 25th in health in the current survey, up from 17th the previous year.

“If you look at the best performing countries, they tend to be smaller countries,” Goodsell said. “It’s easier for a smaller country to reach consensus on many issues, for example, like health care,” compared to larger countries like the United States.
